To manage documents effectively, you need to be able to search for them, using accurate natural language queries, across large (and therefore indexed) document sets.
One of our favourite approaches is the drill-down paradigm. Search in natural language, then look at a relevance-ranked list of results, drill down into dynamic, focused, abstracts, speed-read the best, and only finally have to read the full document. In essence, this answers the question "do I need to read this?" without having to spend the time to actually read it! Only if it is useful to you make that time investment.
