Pseudo Aircraft Systems (PAS) is a computerized flight dynamics & piloting system designed to provide a high fidelity multi-aircraft real-time simulation environment to support Air Traffic Control (ATC) research. i  Functionality is distributed among these components to allow the system to execute fast enough to support real-time operation.

The National Aerospace Lab NLR operates 2 large flight simulation facilities: the National Simulation Facility (NSF) & the Research Flight Simulator (RFS), both full motion simulators. National Simulation Facility NSF:6 degrees-of-freedom motion base with dome of visual system
3 channels of an Evans & Sutherland ESIG-3000 computer image generation system are available, 2 for the Out-of-the-Window scene & one for sensor displays eg ?  IR & radar.
  • A side-by-side ‘glass’ transport cockpit, equipped with 6 programmable CRTs & 3 CDUs The CRTs are interchangeable with conventional instruments or real EFIS displays.
The fully programmable Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS) can be extended with several enhancements: TCAS symbology, tunnel-in-the-sky, dynamic weather radar picture including windshear symbology correlated to custom defined wind fields. i

Tactical environment The simulation facilities include a realistic real-time tactical mission environment, where operational scenario planning facilities are available (CAE ITEMS). Distributed Interactive Simulation Both computer infrastructure & software have been implemented for participation in Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) with other vehicle simulation facilities.
 i  Mathematical models 2 Silicon Graphics Challenge L computers are available for real-time operation (...) each with 4 processors. i   i  A wide range of software development tools, some tailored for the real-time flight simulation application, enables the library of mathematical models to be continuously updated, as required.

 i  This lab-based simulation reproduces "real life" electromagnetic environments seen by receivers eg ?  handsets or complex radar systems.   As RF simulation involves the generation of millions of RF pulses & signals, it consumes much real-time computing power to control the synthesizers in charge of microwave generation. This real-time data processing was traditionally dedicated to digital signal processing (DSP) equipment, while high-level software ran on workstations or multiprocessor-networked PCs.   OMEGA-TECHNOLOGIES S.A., a subsidiary of Thomson-CSF in Massy Cedex, France, is now introducing its new CARIBOU real-time simulation engine, which replaces the 200-MHz TMS320C6201 device with a single Altera ® APEX TM device. In DSP-based simulations, the system architecture is based on a real-time unit (RTU) with a PCI interface plugged into a multiprocessor PC (Windows NT).

Simulation in the QuartusTM II software helps to define the new system architecture.
