Lung Cancer

In the U.S., lung cancer has been the leading cause of cancer deaths in men for many years, & only recently has it achieved this same dubious status in women. Cigarette smoking is the main cause of lung cancer. The risk for developing lung cancer is directly related to the number of cigarettes smoked per day, & the length of time that a person has smoked. The steady rise in the number of women developing lung cancer can be seen to correlate with an equal rise in the use of tobacco by women in the 20th century. Cancer cells tend to be disorganized, relatively non-functional cells that lose regard for traditional boundaries & multiply out of control. Lung cancer usually doesn't cause symptoms until late in the course of the disease. Some people, however, are fortunate to have a lung cancer noted on a routine chest x-ray, early in the course of the disease. Available treatments include surgery to remove cancerous tissue, radiation therapy to kill cancer cells, & anti-cancer medicines.

ⁱ The truth is, smoking causes lung cancer (...). This doesn't mean that everyone who smokes gets cancer. Saying that "smoking causes cancer" is like saying "Russian Roulette causes death." There is a direct cause & effect. The cigarette companies hired "scientists" to say that smoking doesn't cause cancer. These "scientists" did not follow normal scientific methods to demonstrate cause & effect.

The researchers reviewed data from cancer studies on rodents that pharmaceutical companies are required to submit to the Food & Drug Administration as part of the drug approval process.ⁱ Studies found that lovastatin - when administered at blood concentrations 2 to 4 times the levels seen in the maximum doses that might be prescribed to patients - caused a higher-than-normal incidence of stomach, liver & lung tumors in mice, the researchers said. At somewhat higher levels, the other statins that were reviewed - pravastatin, marketed as Pravachol; simvastatin, marketed as Zocor; & fluvastatin, marketed as Lescol - caused rodent cancer, the researchers said. Gemfibrozil, a fibrate, caused liver cancer in mice at blood concentration levels comparable to those seen in humans taking the medication, the researchers said. The researchers acknowledge that drugs that cause cancer in rodents may not do so in humans, or may only do so in certain groups of humans.ⁱ They said people who are alarmed by the study should remember of the 1,000 compounds contained in roasted coffee, 26 have been tested for cancer-causing potential & 19 are considered positive.^*

The EPA report notes that diesel exhaust is ``likely to pose a risk'' of cancer even ``at low levels'' of exposure. The study concludes that the risk of getting lung cancer from diesel could be as high as one in 100 -- even at pollution levels presumed ``safe'' for other respiratory problems.

You may have heard about a new book, Dressed To Kill, which claims that there's a link between bra-wearing & breast cancer. Before you burn yours, rest assured that most cancer specialists say the idea is so ludicrous it isn't even worth commenting on. Medical anthropologist Sydney Ross Singer & his wife, Soma Grismaijer, interviewed more than 4,700 women (...) & found that those who wore bras for 24 hours a day had a 113-fold increase in breast cancer incidence, when compared with women who wear bras less than 12 hours a day. Based on this, they theorize that constriction from bras allows toxins to build up in the breasts' lymphatic system, which leads to cancer.Even when a bra fits snugly, it doesn't interfere with the lymphatic drainage of the breast," explains breast cancer expert Gordon F. Schwartz, M.D., Prof of surgery at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Says Armando E. Giuliano, M.D., director of the breast center at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, Calif., "Breast cancer has many causes--hormonal, environmental, genetic, & dietary--but it's likely that wearing bras isn't one of them."

ⁱ For more than 50 years, scientists have though that beta carotene prevents cancer. Those who took vitamin E had the same incidence of lung cancer as those who didn't, but those who took beta carotene had an 18% higher incidence of lung cancer. The data overwhelmingly show that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, grains & beans helps to prevent some cancers, while a diet rich in fat tends to cause some. Scientists have extracted hundreds of chemicals from foods & have shown that some help prevent cancer while others help cause it. Vitamins A, C & E, the mineral, selenium, & other chemicals eg^? sulforaphane, help to prevent cancer, However, the studies evaluate chemicals out of food & don't really evaluate the total effect of the foods themselves. The data clearly show that eating a low-fat, high fiber diet helps to prevent some cancers & taking vitamin pills has not been shown to protect you from an unhealthful diet. ⁺

How EMFs May Cause Cancer Yet, there are numerous epidemiological studies suggesting that the EMFs produced by home wiring, appliances & power lines play a role in causing leukemia, brain tumors or other malignancies. Now, researchers at the Wayne Hughes Institute in St. Paul, Minnesota, have discovered an EMF-triggered reaction that could be the mechanism by which these fields cause cancer. Other studies have shown that excess activation of one of these enzymes can lead to lymphomas, leukemia & other cancers. The head researcher of this study, Fatih M. Uckun, a former National Institutes of Health (NIH) reviewer for grant-seekers in EMF research, had been highly skeptical of a link between EMFs & cancer. WASHINGTON (...) - Daily cigar smoking can cause several types of cancer & heart disease & cigars shouldn't be considered safe alternative to cigarettes, according to a new study. The National Cancer Institute concluded in a new report that daily cigar smoking causes cancers of the lip, tongue, mouth, throat, larynx, esophagus & lung, as well as chronic lung disease & coronary heart disease -- & possibly pancreatic cancer. Many of these cancers have low survival rates. ``The data are clear -- the toxic substances & carcinogens in cigar smoke, like cigarettes, are associated with increased risks of several kinds of cancers as well as heart & lung disease,'' said Richard Klausner, director of the institute in a release about the study. A large cigar emits up to 20 times more ammonia than a cigarette & 5 to 10 times more cadmium, a cancer-causing metal.
