html Subject: US: Wire: Smoking Marijuana Can Cause Cancer, Study Finds Newshawk: David Hadorn Pubdate: Fri, 17 Dec 1999 Source: Reuters Copyright: 1999 Reuters Limited. SMOKING MARIJUANA CAN CAUSE CANCER, STUDY FINDS WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Smoking marijuana can cause cancer, California researchers said Friday, & aging baby boomers who have been indulging since the swinging 60s may just be starting to feel its ravages. The report, by Dr. Zuo-Feng Zhang of the Jonsson Cancer Center at the University of California Los Angeles, adds to evidence that smoking cannabis can have cancer-causing effects similar to those linked to cigarette smoking. The big message here is that marijuana, like tobacco, can cause cancer.'' i  Those who said they habitually smoked marijuana were more likely to be in the group with head & neck cancers. i  He said pot-smoking baby boomers should be on the lookout for symptoms of head & neck cancer, also common in cigarette smokers & heavy drinkers. i  But the committee said pills using the active ingredients in marijuana were a safer alternative as smoking marijuana can cause cancer, lung damage & babies with low birth weights in pregnant women.

Smoking may be a cause of breast cancer, argued Swiss medical expert Alfredo Morabia at a 2-day meeting of international breast cancer specialists on Mon.   Morabia told the group that no direct link between the appearance of breast cancer & cigarettes has yet been established, "but its  ? a serious possibility & we must pursue our research in this area."   Source(s): Reuters, (...) Smoking Causes Cancer

i  One of them even says that smoking toughens up the lungs, so they tend to be healthier than a nonsmoker's lungs.   The truth is, smoking causes lung cancer (...). This doesn't mean that everyone who smokes gets cancer. Saying that "smoking causes cancer" is like saying "Russian Roulette causes death." There is a direct cause & effect. The cigarette companies hired "scientists" to say that smoking doesn't cause cancer. i  I feel that if someone blows smoke at me, I should be able to call the police & have the smoker charged with attempted murder. +

Can an incessant cycle of heal/damage/heal cause cancer?

Cb Message: Can an incessant cycle of heal/damage/heal cause cancer? I've noticed that in many situations,..., healing, ad infinitum; cancer is typically the result. Eg: Smoking causes heat damage to the lungs, forcing the lungs to heal, but the healing is never allowed to finish as the smoker lights up again.

Another example, skin cancer from incessant tanning. If this is the case, how can anyone insist smoking doesn't cause cancer? Re:Can an incessant cycle of heal/damage/heal cause cancer?

Health risks of cigar smoking documented at American Cancer Society state-of-the-science conference

July 15, 1998 Washington -- The available scientific knowledge on the health risks of cigar smoking is more than sufficient to conclude that cigar smoking causes cancer & is a serious risk to public health, according to findings from a recent American Cancer Society conference on cigar smoking. Experts on the medical & behavioral aspects of cigar smoking at the conference recommended that laws & regulations limiting access to cigarettes by children & adolescents be applied to cigars & all other tobacco products. *
  • Cigar smoke causes cancers of the lip, tongue, mouth, throat, larynx, esophagus & lung.
  •  i  Cigar smoking is NOT a safe substitute for cigarette smoking. Inhaling cigar smoke is not required for someone to become addicted to nicotine; oral membranes directly absorb the nicotine in cigars whether the cigar is smoked or just held in the mouth.
  • A growing number of adolescents is smoking cigars, which makes cigar smoking not only an adult problem. +
Based on this evidence, the American Cancer Society is recommending concerted action by health professionals, government & the public health community to discourage cigar smoking & to better control advertising & promotion which appeals to children.

How do we know that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer?

In twenty five years, involved in the care of patients with lung cancer, more than 3000 cases, taking a careful history of smoking in all patients, I have never seen a case of small cell lung cancer in a non-smoker; nor have I ever seen a case of large cell undifferentiated lung cancer in a non-smoker.
The long answer is that the association of lung cancer with smoking has been proven by large epidemiological studies.
Doll & Hill in England (1)& Hammond & Horn in the U.S. (2) proved beyond any shadow of doubt that cigarette smoking markedly increased the chances that a person would develop lung cancer. Auerbach described the changes in the bronchial epithelium in relation to smoking & in relation to lung cancer & reproduced all of the pathologic features leading up to lung cancer in dogs with induced cigarette smoking.

WHAT ABOUT SMOKING & DISEASE? There is an overwhelming medical & scientific consensus that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema & other serious diseases in smokers. Smokers are more ?  likely to develop serious diseases, like lung cancer, than non-smokers. Had we only known sooner about the many deadly risks related to smoking, we would certainly have shared that knowledge with potential consumers at the 1st opportunity, instead of denying any connection as strongly as we could for decade after decade. IS SMOKING ADDICTIVE? Cigarette smoking is addictive, as that term is most commonly used today. +
